Story Line:  SPECTRE, the international criminal organization, harbors a deep vendetta against MI6 agent James Bond due to the death of their agent, Dr. No, in Jamaica. The organization's chief strategist, Czechoslovak chess grandmaster Kronsteen, hatches a plan to ensnare Bond by enticing him with the promise of acquiring a Lektor cryptography device from the Soviet Union's consulate in Istanbul. SPECTRE operative Rosa Klebb, formerly the head of SMERSH (Soviet counter-intelligence), is assigned to oversee the operation and selects the skilled assassin Donald Grant to eliminate Bond at the opportune moment. To set the trap in motion, Klebb recruits a cipher clerk at the consulate, Tatiana Romanova, deceiving her into believing that Klebb is still working for SMERSH.

In London, Bond is summoned for a meeting with M, who informs him that Tatiana has expressed her desire to defect to the West, offering British intelligence the Lektor as leverage. While M is cautious, suspecting a trap, he chooses to honor Tatiana's plea. Before embarking on the mission, Bond is equipped with a special briefcase containing various defensive gadgets and an ArmaLite AR-7 sniper rifle. In Istanbul, Bond collaborates with Ali Kerim Bey, the head of MI6's local branch, while awaiting Tatiana's signal. Grant shadows Bond to protect him until he can steal the Lektor. During their time in Istanbul, Kerim is targeted by Soviet agent Krilencu. After a skirmish with the attackers at a gypsy camp, Kerim and Bond successfully eliminate Krilencu before he can escape the city.

In due course, Tatiana rendezvous with Bond in his hotel suite and agrees to provide the consulate's floor plans to aid in the Lektor's theft. The two spend an intimate night together, unaware that SPECTRE is clandestinely recording their actions. Armed with the consulate's floor plans, Bond and Kerim devise a plan to seize the Lektor before making a hasty escape from the city on the Orient Express. Aboard the train, Kerim and Bond subdue Benz, a Soviet security officer. Bond returns to Tatiana to await their meeting with one of Kerim's associates, only to discover that Grant has killed both Kerim and Benz. Bond questions Tatiana's true intentions.

Upon the train's arrival in Belgrade, Bond informs one of Kerim's sons about his father's death and receives instructions to rendezvous with a British agent named Nash in Zagreb. However, Grant eavesdrops on their conversation, kills Nash, and assumes his identity. He drugs Tatiana during dinner and overpowers Bond. Grant reveals Tatiana's unwitting role in SPECTRE's plot, intending to kill them both, making it appear as a murder-suicide and leaving fabricated blackmail evidence to disgrace the British intelligence community. Bond cleverly tricks Grant into triggering a booby trap within Bond's briefcase, leading to a fierce confrontation in which Bond prevails, killing Grant. Carrying the Lektor and the incriminating film, Bond and Tatiana disembark from the train in Istria, Yugoslavia, and follow Grant's escape plan. They elude SPECTRE agents' helicopter and boat assaults before reaching safety.

Upon learning of Grant's demise and Bond's survival, SPECTRE's enigmatic chairman, Number 1, orders Kronsteen's execution for the failure of his plan. Since SPECTRE had previously promised to return the Lektor to the Russians, Klebb is tasked with its recovery and Bond's elimination. Klebb locates the pair while they rest in a Venice hotel and disguises herself as a maid. Holding Bond at gunpoint, she orders Tatiana to leave the room. However, Tatiana returns, wrestling with Klebb and knocking her firearm to the floor. A struggle ensues as Klebb attempts to use a poison-tipped blade concealed in her shoe to harm Bond. Tatiana retrieves the pistol and dispatches Klebb, saving Bond. With their mission accomplished, Bond and Tatiana enjoy a romantic boat ride together.
