Story Line: Clownfish Marlin and his partner Coral reside in a cozy anemone in the Great Barrier Reef, eagerly anticipating the hatching of their many eggs. Unfortunately, their tranquil neighborhood is disrupted when a ravenous barracuda sets its sights on Coral and Marlin. As their neighbors hide in fear, Coral valiantly attempts to protect their eggs, tragically sacrificing herself in the process as the barracuda devours her and most of their eggs. Marlin, trying to shield Coral, is knocked unconscious. Only a single egg, slightly cracked, escapes the barracuda's jaws. Marlin makes a solemn promise to safeguard his sole surviving offspring, whom he names Nemo.
Marlin becomes an overprotective father, especially when Nemo embarks on his first day of school and Marlin has a conversation with Nemo's teacher. During the school outing, Nemo strays too close to a speedboat, and scuba divers capture him. Marlin desperately chases the boat but to no avail. In his quest to find Nemo, Marlin encounters Dory, a forgetful blue tang fish, who offers her assistance. Together, they come across Bruce, Anchor, and Chum, three sharks who have sworn off eating fish. Their journey takes a perilous turn when they stumble upon a diver's mask that accidentally triggers a chain of events, including a close encounter with an anglerfish and a ride on the East Australian Current, with the help of sea turtles like Crush and Squirt.
Meanwhile, Nemo finds himself in a fish tank in a dentist's office in Sydney, befriending the "Tank Gang" led by Gill, a Moorish idol. The Tank Gang informs Nemo about his grim future – being given to the dentist's niece, Darla, who has a history of unintentionally harming fish. Gill hatches an escape plan for Nemo, involving blocking the tank's filter with a pebble, forcing the dentist to remove the fish for cleaning. Nemo's attempt at this plan nearly proves disastrous.
Marlin and Dory awaken to find themselves facing the challenge of retrieving the lost diver's mask from a deep trench. With Dory memorizing the mask's address, they escape an anglerfish's clutches, only to take a detour against Marlin's judgment, leading to a harrowing encounter with a forest of jellyfish that leaves them unconscious. They wake up in the East Australian Current, guided by sea turtles.
Marlin's quest becomes a legend passed across the ocean, reaching Sydney through Nigel the pelican, who shares the story with the Tank Gang. In the tank, Nemo perseveres and successfully blocks the filter, causing the tank to become overrun with algae.
Marlin and Dory eventually exit the East Australian Current and have a wild encounter with a blue whale that expels them into Sydney Harbour. With Nigel's assistance, they escape seagulls and arrive at the dentist's office, only to discover that the dentist has upgraded to a high-tech filter, foiling the Tank Gang's previous escape plan. Believing Nemo is dead, Marlin parts ways with Nigel.
Nemo, however, has managed to escape through a drain leading to the ocean. Marlin, Nemo, and Dory finally reunite, with Dory's memory returning when she reads the word "Sydney" on a drainpipe. They join forces to break free from a fishing trawler's net and return home to the reef. Marlin's newfound confidence and Dory's continued friendship with Bruce, Anchor, and Chum mark a happy ending. Nemo heads off to school as Marlin and Dory bid him farewell. Meanwhile, the Tank Gang escapes their bags in Sydney Harbor, pondering their next steps.
